One of 13 photographs taken in July 1990, during construction of the Dornoch Firth bridge. The annotation on the back reads ~ The second floating crane unit – the Highland Marine barge ‘HM4’ with 800 sc Wimpey track-laying diesel crane. This unit had a diversity of duties – A B5 WIRTH drill evacuated the remainder of the rubble into the big barge for dumping, then a diver was sent down to inspect the interior of the pile, followed by the insertion of the cylindrical steel-mesh reinforcing tube and the whole pumped forth concrete. Each floating unit had its Mess quarters, lavatory etc and its own attendant barges and motorboats.
