The set of documents includes: a recommendation 1869 by Rev Duncan Stewart Minister of Dornoch for John's fitness for the Indian Medical Service, including a schedule of his qualifications and reference to his practice as a doctor in Dornoch; birth, marriage and death certificates; Certificate of the Indian Medical Board reference fitness to practice; a copy of an extract from the London Gazette 22 Feb 70 recording his appointment as an Assistant Surgeon in Bengal and an extract from the Indian Army & Civil Service List 1873 showing his appointment with the 13th Bengal Cavalry.
