Robert John Mackay, or "RJ" as he was universally known, owned the trading store at 10 Front Street, Embo for many years. My maternal grandparents, Donald and Annie Cumming, lived next door at 9 Front Street. RJ's old shop is now the Embo Post Office. RJ was a bit of a character and loved to keep the Northern Times advised of all Embo news and gossip. This made him many friends..and enemies. When I left school in the late 1950s I approached him for a character reference and he gave me a glowing one. However it also included the quaint claim that I was "from good stock" and this caused much amusement with prospective employers, so much so that I had to stop using it. Comments such as, "meat, chicken or fish?" did pall after a time! Of course such a fine pedigree testimonial was completely unnecessary as all the Embo Mackays were known to be from good stock!!
