The old and new - Historylinks Archive upgrade
Two weeks prior to the coronavirus lock-down the programme of a Highland Museums’ meeting in Alness on 12 March 2020, included a presentation on the ‘Dornoch Historylinks Image Library’ as a means of public access to complete museum collections. In closing remarks it was acknowledged that the software was showing signs of age (left image) and, whilst Plexus Media were no longer marketing the original version, they had indicated an upgraded version could be made available but at a cost only viable as a Highland museums collaborative venture. At the outset of lock-down Museums Galleries Scotland encouraged enhancement of museums'virtual presence', inviting applications for grant funding from their ‘Digital Resilience Fund’. This provided a golden opportunity to future proof the 'Image Library' website, with enhancements including direct access to our film archive. Our grant application was boosted by Plexus Media assurance that the tailoring of software to our requirements, plus bulk transfer of images and data, could be completed within 2-3 weeks. True to their word, following grant approval on 8 May the upgraded website went live on 26 May 2020. The pdf link provides access to a follow-up report to those attending the 12 March presentation highlighting the advantages of the upgrading.
