The restrictions of coronavirus social isolation brought to the fore innovations of long term benefit. As a prime example, following 13th March cancellation of an appointment for elective surgery hip replacement, by the end of May an opportunity was seized, via the Dornoch Medical Centre, to gain a physiotherapy telephone appointment for advice on possible pain-relief exercises. Within two working days, follow-up telephone contact was initiated by a physiotherapist and, after c 10 minutes conversation, there was email contact with a link to instructions for recommended exercises. (Screenshot image above.)

The magic of this link was that clicking on the blue underlined 'Video' against each exercise provided a video demonstration. In the past, general experience was a significant wait for a physiotherapist appointment and, particularly in the Highlands, the need to travel to locations not well served by public transport. Following an appointment it was a not uncommon that, despite the provision of diagrammatic details of prescribed exercises, at home doubts arose about correct following of instructions. It is accepted that in some cases a physical examination may be required but this could form an option at the close of the initial telephone contact. Overall, the Physiotools innovation provides a welcome advance.
