Herring Harvesters 1949 - 1952
First in a series of newspaper extracts and monochrome photographs copied with the permission of Elizabeth (Liz) Robertson of Embo. The photographs were taken between 1949 and 1952 when her mother, Christina Mackay, her aunt Bella Mackay and grandmother Mary Ann Makay were amongst those who followed the Silver Darlings (herring) fishing fleet. Christina and Bella Mackay both started off in Fraserburgh in 1949 and during the subsequent years until 1952 they followed the fishing to Ullapool, Wick and Yarmouth working with Danny Stewarts's crew from Wick. The first newspaper extract, with the title Herring Harvesters' provides a selection of photographs of the fishing fleet and those following the fleet. The photograph at right centre shows, left to right Bella Mackay, Wilma Ross, Christina Mackay, Alan (El) Mackay, Kennina Mackay and Jessie Rose. [NB The extract caption does not show the correct names]. (See also picture #13652)
