DHS Film night 'Silver Darlings'
Extract from the Northern Times with the title 'Silver darlings were hard work but fun' reporting the highlight of a Dornoch Heritage Society Film Night held on 15 December 2017. At a popular annual pre-Christmas event held, in the Dornoch Social Club, Peter Wild showed a selection of films opening with a magic lantern show based on a collection of hand painted slides. This was followed be films of events in the late 1950s and 1960s, with a trip to Dornoch beach and lido, the visit of a Canadian Pipe Band and the fondly remembered Dornoch Light Railway. The main film of the evening was a remarkable insight to the lives of Christina Mackay and her sister Bella who accompanied their mother Mary Ann following the 'Silver Darlings' herring fishing to ports in Scotland and England. The recording of Christina and Bella's stories in interviews by Lynne Mahoney,, accompanied by a treasure chest of monochrome photographs has provided Historylinks with a spell binding archive film. [Use the ‘Groups’ tag above then ‘Film’ to view films ‘The Herring Girls’ Parts 1 to 3]. The Northern Times article is accompanied by a monochrome photograph of the Mackay trio at work and a 2017 colour photograph of Christine and Bella. (See also picture #13572)
