Rigours of life in Golspie - 200 years ago
An article published in the Northern Times of Friday May 5, 1972 with the title 'Rigours of life in Golspie - 200 years ago' highlighting aspects of life in the Golspie are in the 1700's which formed an attraction to and were recorded by the Rev William Keith. The article covers a range of subjects: the abundance of sea life, fish and food prices, a single two-wheeled carriage for the whole of the parish, the route into Caithness made impassable as a result of Golspie burn overflowing twice in 10 days and health problems arising from the use of peat and turf for fuel. Of particular interest is his account of a battle near Littleferry, one of the last to be fought in the country. A skirmish took place between a party of rebels and the local militia, The rebels were beaten with several men of rank taken prisoner. The fighting was said to have taken place on the low lying ground between Golspie and Little Ferry but,. in recording this event, the Rev Keith did not know of any evidence being uncovered to substantiate the claim.
