Donald McLeod
An article published on pages 10 and 11 of 'The Western Australian' of Monday January 18, 2016, part of a series of 'Mugshots from our Past', about Donald McLeod who was born in Dornoch. The article is entitled 'A life less ordinary from war to prison'. It recounts that Donald, who emigrated with his family from Scotland in 1888 to Western Australia, demonstrated some astonishing acts of bravery after his arm was blown off at Gallipoli but his life ended tragically at the bottom of a Pilbara mine shaft less than a year after he served three year jail term for running down a 20 year old woman as she alighted from a city tram car. He was found guilty of manslaughter but the jury recommended leniency and he was jailed for three months "without hard labour". He was only 40 when he died.
