One of a series of 30 photographs, taken on 30th May 1990, during the construction of the Dornoch Firth bridge. The annotation on the back reads ~ Close-up of the first floating unit – the jack-up pile driver. The steel case of the pier leg is seen entering the water at an angle between the two legs of the jack-up unit. This steel case is about 7 inches in diameter and the top of this is attached to a cone-shaped piece, upon the narrow top of which the pile driver is brought to bear.
