One of a series of 30 photographs, taken on 30th May 1990, during the construction of the Dornoch Firth Bridge. The annotation on the back reads ~ The first floating unit is seen very nearly at the north shore. This unit is the pile driver, pounding the pier steel plate shell down into the bed of the firth. Nowhere does it reach bedrock but is sunk a sufficient distance for practical purposes.
