Scriber or joiner's compass made of iron. Belonged to George Sutherland (1879-1960) of Birichen, uncle of John O Sutherland. George was apprenticed to Alex Ross of Rhevaig (between Dornoch and Creich) in about 1893. In those days apprentices made most of their own tools and George may have made these for himself. They are likely to have been used when he was working on the extension and renovation of Skibo Castle in the early 1900s. George later emigrated to Winnipeg but could not stand the Canadian winters and eventually settled in Florida where he lived until his death at the age of 81.
