Embo House Armorial

Date Added: 27 April 2010 Year: 1677 Institution Name: dnhhl Cat No: | 2010_027_01 | Picture No: 8420

Photograph of an Armorial incorporated in Embo House, Dornoch. The Embo House description page 38 in the book 'Sutherland - An Illustrated Architectural Guide' by Elizabeth Beaton ISBN 1-873190-24-7 states : "The west range contained kitchen with segmental-headed hearth with reset armorial date 1657. The arms are those of Sir Robert Gordon of Embo and his wife Jean Leslie.' The photograph of the armorial shows a date of 1677 rather than 1657 as quoted in the book. The owners of Embo House kindly agreed the stone could be displayed at Historylinks Museum during renovation works at the house and agreed that as a local craft project a replica could be carved. There is also a marriage stone incorporated into an arch, in what used to be the cattle court at Embo farm. Comment left on 21 March 2011 at 18:48 by Bill Hadden
The stone referred to by Mr Hadden is probably that of the first baronet, who married Margaret Leslie (aunt of Jean)in which case the date may have been 1627. Was that stone ever photographed? Comment left on 19 June 2016 at 22:52 by Graeme Muckart
