Monochrome photograph taken outside 9 Front Street, Embo in about 1926. Standing is Donald Cumming (Dannagh) and seated his wife Annie Cumming (Nee Fraser). Boy is their grandchild Donald Cumming and girl is grandchild Isobel Cumming who were visiting from the USA. Their mother was Jessie Ann Cumming, daughter of Donald and Annie Cumming and their father was Donald Cumming the son of Donald Cumming and Jessie Cumming (Nee Ross) - all of Embo.

I think that I am the one that donated this photo of my Embo grandparents and American cousins to the Dornoch Museum in 2009. My grandfather Donald Cumming (Dannagh) was an uncle of John Darling Cumming.
In 1911 John Darling Cumming's family lived in the "White House" on the upper part of Gate Street, Embo. In that year John Darling Cumming was aged 3 years and had three older siblings as follows, William James aged 10, David Alex aged 6 and Agnes Jessie aged 6.
Their father was William Cumming aged 38 and their mother was May Elizabeth aged 30. William, from all reports, was a successful fisherman with his own boat and crew. At about that time he also became quite famous for bravely saving a young girl from drowning on the Golspie side of the Little Ferry on Loch Fleet. May Elizabeth was also prominent because she was born in Buffalo in the USA.
William the son made a name for himself in later life as a journalist on I believe the Press and Journal newspaper in Aberdeen. Later from 1947 to 1949 he edited the Northern Times in Golspie.
I met William junior often when I was a child as his father William senior was, as I stated, the younger brother of my maternal grandfather Donald James Cumming (Dannagh) of Mizpah Cottage at 9 Front Street, Embo. I also knew of John Darling but I don’t remember meeting him. Reports were that several of the children of this Cumming family did well in life and that at least one was prominent in the entertainment industry.
It was my intention to contact David Cumming direct but I have just upgraded my computer and it now seems unable to “capture†the email address of highlighted contributors.

I am the daughter of David Alexander Cumming brother to William. My brother Hamish and I live in Vancouver Canada and visited Embo some years back. Much earlier I also met the journalist my uncle Willie and his daughter Barbara when I was in Scotland.
