My Great Uncle Alexander Leslie from Garbh Leathad, Airdens, Bonar Bridge, was a Cousin of the three MacLean's on this memorial, they are all mentioned on the Bonar Bridge War Memorial with three other Cousins name Levy, so in total there are seven Cousins all mentioned on the Bonar Bridge memorial, so sad. Hi there, I am the grand nephew of the 3 Maclean brothers. Their sister Kate was my grandmother. The Maclean's mother was Elizabeth Macpherson, who came from Daviot and Jane her twin sister was the mother of Martin Leslie. Comment left on 19 May 2016 at 03:25 by Alan MacRae

Hi again, should have read Alexander Leslie. Martin who wrote original post is the great nephew of Alexander Leslie. Alexander Maclean, had emigrated to Australia in 1912 with his brother William, their older brother Thomas was already there. Alexander was killed on 25/4/15 during the first day of the Gallipoli Landings. William also at Gallipoli served there for 3 months before being wounded by a hand grenade. He was evacuated to Britain where he spent many months in hospital. On recovery he continued to serve in the middle East with the Australian light Horse. He returned to Sutherland after the war and then emigrated to the USA where he married an Ullapool girl. He died in 1982. Thomas also in the Australian Army was killed in Belgium in 1917, he is buried in Nieppe, France close to the Belgian border. Kemp a former Glasgow policeman, served with the Royal Scots and was killed in France in 1918; he and Alexander have no graves and are remembered on memorials in Arras in France and Gallipoli Turkey on Lone Pine memorial. Also the Maclean's, whose father Donald was a shepherd, lived originally between Lairg and the Overcraig Hotel. Latterly they resided at Drumliah, Bonar Bridge. As you climb the hill after about a quarter mile the house is still there abandoned on the left side of the road. The parents were there during the first World war.
