Set of GPO letter scales to weigh up to 8oz, made by De Grave Short & Co Ltd., with circular pan for weights and square one for letters. The scales break down into four parts (a-d) and there are four loose weights (e-h) - half oz, 2 x 2oz, 4oz. The wooden base plate has two weights apparently fixed to it, as does the circular pan. On the underside of the base there are two small holes, probably from somekind of attachment to a desk etc. The top of the wood is varnished and has lots of scratches. The edges are shaped and bevelled. The two attached weights are on top of one another and the top one is inscribed "G P O 1 OZ J &J SIDDONS". There are two other pieces of metal attached to the base - a small flattened circular brass fitment and a brass base and stand for attaching the balance. Both are fixed in place with small screws. The stand is decorated with three incised lines. (b) - brass balance pivot inscribed with "CLASS B TO WEIGH 8OZ" along the both sides. All the pieces are attached with small screws and one section has been painted black. (c) square pan inscribed "G P O De Grave Short & Co. Ltd." Handle attached with two small brass rivets. (d) - round pan with two weights fixed to it.(e-h) four weights.
