The Bannockburn Challenge Shield was competed for annually at the Highland Rifle Association meetings at Inverness by company teams of the Volunteers of Scotland, and Scottish Volunteer corps in England. It was first competed for in 1882.
The twenty-third annual competition of the Highland Rifle Association opened on Tuesday 7 Aug.1883, at the Longman Ranges, Inverness, and continued till the following Thursday evening. Competition for the Bannockburn Challenge Shield comprised squads of eight men, shooting seven shots at each distance 200 and 500 yards. Position was kneeling or standing at 200 yards, and prone or kneeling at 500 yards. In all, 23 Companies competed for the Shiled in 1883. The winning team in 1883 was the Dornoch Co., Sutherland Rifle Volunteers, scoring 405 points. The team was under the command of Captain Mackintosh, and consisted of Colour-Sergeant Bridgeford, Sergeant G. Bell, Sergeant R. Mackay (Queen's Prizeman), Sergeant W.S. Fraser, Sergeant George Mackintosh, Corporal J. Sutherland, Private J. Sutherland, and Private A. Matheson.

I found you when trying to identify a large trophy shield next to my father in a photograph, which I believe would have been taken in 1973 or '74. From what I have found, it is the Bannockburn Challenge Shield.
My dad was a competitive shooter for the RAF, and captain of the service rifle team. He was stationed at RAF Kinloss, as it was then. If you would like a copy of the photo, please drop me an email. Comment left on 06 December 2020 at 02:13 by Christine Fraser Thank you Administrator
