Petition for guardianship of Skelbo Castle
Letter of from J.K. Bell concerning the precarious condition of Skelbo Castle and the recent demolition proposal from the Owners. At a public meeting in Dornoch on 24 February 1987 it was decided that a petition should be addressed to the Secretary of State for Scotland seeking his intervention and rescue action by means of an Agreement for Guardianship of Skelbo Castle. This form of management agreement would mean that the Owners would keep the landownership and the Nation would accept responsibility for the Castle.
The reverse of the letter provides 'Skelbo Historical Notes' and the penultimate paragraph of the letter refers to the attachment of a copy of the Petition, with a request that the recipient adds their signature and that of any associates, to collect as many signatures as possible for this rescue action. Unfortunately museum acquisition did not include a copy of the Petition form.
The pdf link below provides direct access to a copy of the full document. An additional first page with handwritten addressee details has been included in the pdf showing that the Petition was distributed far and wide.
