'50 Years Ago' cutting from the Northern Times of 5 December 2024, recording a special meeting of the Dornoch Town Council on December 6, 1974 to ensure the preservation of the Royal Burgh's traditions and historical records, in the light of the implementation of local government reorganisation in May 1975. One of the important steps highlighted was that Provost Harry Clunie should make a personal approach to the Countess of Sutherland "for the surrender of the Burgh's Royal Charter in order that it may be offered to the the Keeper of Records for safekeeping at Register House Edinburgh". It was the understanding that the Charter was in Dunrobin Castle given that the Earls of Sutherland had by hereditary right been Provosts of Dornoch, with the Third Duke of Sutherland as the last member of the family to be Provost 1861 - 1868. As there had been no proper council chamber at the time it was probable that the charter had been taken to the Castle for safekeeping.
