A page from the Inverness Courier 'From our Archives' published in 1998, the first article of which records a report published in 22 February 1848 of Four lives lost by suffocation on the sloop 'Mary' at anchor at Lochinver. On discovery of the crew of four dead onboard, it is of interest that the first course of action was "an express was despatched to Scourie for Mr McIver, the Duke of Sutherland's Factor who arrived next day". Mr McIver then summoned Drs Black of Tongue and Gordon of Scourie who "ascertained that the cause of their death was suffocation from smoke". "Mr McIver then took measures to inform the relations of the deceased of their sad and untimely death."
