The Highland Council Waste Services continued with their scheduled Refuse and Recycling collections. In maintaining their essential public health role whilst meeting social distancing requirements for their workers, when necessary a small council car followed the refuse lorry. The car was driven by one of the collection team, so that necessary separation could be maintained by the refuse vehicle driver and one team member travelling in the wide vehicle cab with the third member of the team in an isolated position in the following car.

As lock-down progressed it was recognised that, in addition to the NHS, a wide range of key workers, such as waste services, were providing essential care to the community in self isolation. It became acknowledged and accepted that all key workers were embraced in the public demonstration of gratitude, the Thursday evening applause.
