A letter from the Prime Minister was delivered to households during the last week of March, acknowledging the dramatic change to everyday life caused by the coronavirus and stressing the need to slow the spread of the disease and reduce the number of people needing hospital treatment in the interests of saving as many lives as possible. The instruction to stay at home was emphasised with reiteration of the general restrictions imposed and the letter closes with an outline of measures being taken and thanks to staff in the NHS and care sector. It was accompanied by a leaflet setting out the support available and the rules to be followed. (See following image)

The Government response was reinforced at this time with the adoption of a 5 p.m. televised daily updating briefing from Downing Street, conducted by the Prime Minister or a member of the Cabinet, with flanking support from principal Scientific and Medical Officers.
