After leaving Dornoch Academy William's early years in the town clerk's officer were interrupted by his service in the First World War. Returning to the Town Clerk's Offic his responsibilities and reputation grew and he was the obvious and unanimous choice when the Town Clerkship became vacant in 1941. He was also secretary to the Library Committee and Factor for the Torrish Estate.
