Embo Fishing Boats
MP3 file of a talk by Ann Coombs and Joanna Hambly about 'The Embo Fishing Fleet'.. The talk was given to the Dornoch Heritage Society on 19 Nov 2016. The east coast fishing industry in the 19th century employed thousands of people. Embo was part of the Helmsdale district and in 1882 had 24 fist class boats employing 80 fishermen and boys. However by the early 20th century there was a decline in the fishing industry, which was then concentrated in a few large centres. Ultimately the Embo boats were beached in Loch Fleet with a local story that they were then burnt in protest. During Anne’s investigation of the remaining timbers at Loch Fleet there was no evidence of the burning of the boats. All of the boats beached at Loch Fleet were Zulu boats designed in 1878-1879 by William Campbell of Lossiemouth and named in honour of the Zulu warriors. There were 30,000 Zulu boats in the north east of Scotland but now only four remain. A search has been initiated to identify the Embo boats from fishing records at held in Wick
