He was a member of the Clyde River Patrol at this time, which he referred to as a sea-going version of Dad’s army.

After graduating, his National Service was with the Royal Navy. He was mostly land based, serving with the Fleet Air Arm at Abbots Inch near Glasgow and other aerodromes that fed the RN on the east coast. He was doctor aboard the HMS Implacable for a while as she sailed around British waters, he was not one of the lucky ones for whom to join the navy was to see the world!

Later he was a Surgeon Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Their ‘clubhouse’ was the SS Carrick, a clipper that plied between Adelaide and Glasgow and was moored beside Jamaica Bridge on the Clyde for many years.
