First letter Pte Alexander Murray Feb 1900
Copy of the first four page letter, written in pencil on regimental notepaper, by Pte Alexander Murray to his brother-in-law David from Fort George. Prior to his embarkation for the Boer War, Alexander was keen to settle his affairs at home and mentions in this letter that he will be writing to the pastor about "giving over the place" to his brother-in-law David "if anything will happen to me" and as "we have been insured by a[sic] Elgin gentleman for £100 each I willed this over to Betsy". He also asks Davie to give a book on gardening to Robert Murray who worked with him and to burn his letters "in my box....if I don't get back for some time". This letter also refers to "my old mistress sent everyone of us from Dornoch 25 shillings" yet another example of the community honouring these volunteers.
