An unused stick of wax, with embossed lettering 'Engravers Wax'. Engravers wax was used to colour engravings in metal, commonly with black wax used to fill the engraved numerals on clock faces. Melted wax was dropped into the engraving with surplus removed when the wax was set by use of a card to scrape off excess. Red wax was commonly used to seal letters, the wax being held at the edge of a candle flame with the melted droplets of wax dropping to seal the join of an envelope. With a large disk of melted wax it was possible to stamp this with a unique embossed emblem or the engraving of a signet ring. Sealing wax could be of a different form, with a wick inside the stick of wax but this form of engravers wax could be used as a substitute for the purpose designed version.
