Set of three WW1 medals ('Pip, Squeak and Wilfred') the 1914-15 Star (Mons Star). British War Medal and Allied Victory medal inscribed with the named of the recipient 659 Pte J MacLennan Seaforths and two inscribed Territorial Force Efficiency Medals George V and George V1 awarded to 2812395 Pte J Maclennon. Despite the difference in army number the medals may have belonged to the same person. In the initial period of WW1 soldiers had a Regimental number but as a result of the massive surge in recruitment a system of Army numbering was adopted, thus an individual could have two numbers. It was often the case that servicemen would steadfastly refer to an original Regimental Number to increase their chance of return to the same regiment from a reinforcement unit. The Mons Star was awarded servicemen of the British Expeditionary Force on active service in France and Belgium during the period 4 Aug to 22 Nov 1914. All medals are without medal ribbons. The medals were issued c 1922 at which time there was a popular newspaper cartoon with characters Pip, Squeak and Wilfred and these names were commonly used to refer to the trio of medals. The medals were contained in a brown cardboard box with metal corner reinforcements and the inscription 'Lennies Opticians 46 Princes Street, Edinburgh'.
