Extract from the introduction Section 1 of the file 'The War Diaries of the 26th Company, Canadian Forestry Corps July 1942 - July 1943' (2014_034_01) showing the locations of units of the Canadian Forestry Corps in Scotland. This copy of the map has been annotated in red to highlight the locations in the Dornoch area: No 2 at Rosehall (17 Company); No 3 and 4 at Spinningdale and No 5 Skibo, Clashmore (26 Company). The 26 Company War Diary extract at Section 2 of the file records in the first entry the exact location of the Skibo camp at "grid reference 2774 1234 sheet 21". This is a Cassini projection grid reference as used by the Army in WW2. Converted to latitude and longitude it converts to Lat 57 degrees 52 min 28 sec N Long 4 degrees 06 min 10sec W, or in current Ordnance Survey Grid Reference NH73409 89430. This is a location very close to the A949 at a slight bend in the road, west of the 2014 tradesmen's entrance to Skibo Castle. The presence of pond north of the road in this area indicates this as an obvious site for a CFC mill pond.

The mill was on the south of the Clashmore to Dornoch road opposite to the black pool and the camp was situated just in behind the pool

Hi we are trying to find out about 18 company based in Kiltarlity near Inverness. My mother in law’s father who was Canadian served there and married her mother. Sadly he was killed in Holland 1945. Comment left on 09 July 2018 at 10:16 by Matt WALTON
