Mapping stories on unique canvas
Extract from the Northern Times published on 19 September 2014 with a report of the unique 'storymap' of Dornoch unveiled at a ceremony in the town's Oversteps Eventide Home on 11 Sep. A colourful canvas measuring 1 x 2m has digital images inspired by legends and personal memories superimposed on a idealised map of Dornoch. Oversteps was chosen as the venue for the launch because several of the home's residents contributed stories, reminiscences and artwork for the map following workshops organised by Historylinks Museum. The 'Storymap', one of six produced by museums in Gairloch, Strathpeffer, Inverness, Grantown-on-Spey, Newtonmore and Historylinks Dornoch, forms part of the Highland Storymaps Project. Associated with a roving exhibition 'Needed on a Journey' and part of Homecoming 2014 'My Heart's in the Highlands', the culmination of the projects will be all six storymaps and the exhibition on display at the Culloden Visitor Centre on 30 November 2014. The article has complementary colour photographs of the storymap, Oversteps contributors Cathy Grant, Brora Butterworth and Ralph Philipson, and Strathpeffer artist Bob Pegg Storymap Co-ordinator and Sue Higgins Curator Historylinks.
