Fears for Ice Age ridge with extend quarry
Copy of an article published in the Northern Times January 23, 2009 with title 'Fears for Ice Age ridge with go-ahead to extend quarry' highlighting local concerns that a significant Dornoch geological feature, that has stood more or less intact for centuries, could be destroyed by extensive quarrying activities. At a Council Planning meeting held on 21 January, the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross Planning Applications and Review Committee approved the quarrying application submitted by I McHardy for further quarrying of the esker, measuring around one hectare in total and reaching a height of up to ten metres to the west of the B9168 Poles Road. Quarry operators who had already worked part of the ridge intend to dig deeper into its western side. The committee discussed the employment offered by further quarrying operations and it was finally agreed that the application should be approved subject to a commitment by the Area Planning Manager that the site would be visited annually to ensure conditions attached to the planning permission were properly applied.
