
Queens Prize Wimbledon - Robert Mackay 1883/1892
Circular dark wood plinth (a) with large silver and silver plated goblet shaped trophy (b). The two items appear to go together even though they have different details. The plinth has a silver plaque on the front engraved with a leafy border and the details of the prize: "Won by Colr Sergt R Mackay Winner of Queens Prize Wimbledon 1883 B Coy Dornoch 1st Sutherland. Bisley 16th July 10 Shots at 600 Yards 5 4 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 = 49". Upper section of plinth had become detached - stuck to base with PVA glue 12/4/06.
The trophy is ornately decorated. The main body of the trophy is silver, but the handles may be plated. It has angular handles with a cast decoration of leaves and leaf shaped mounts, which project above the rim of the goblet. The foot of the goblet has a cast decoration of feathers, and the lower part of the bowl of the goblet has a wide band of cast leaves. On each side of the bowl there is an oval shield with eight bosses round the rim. One shield is engraved "THE MARTINI HENRY WIMBLEDON CUP 1892". The other shield has a relief decoration of Bacchus in the form of a cherub crowned with vines and grapes, waving a quaich-like bowl and clasping another cherub, on a bed of vines.
