Colt revolver response to enquiry concerning date

A response from the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery to an enquiry by the finder of the heavily corroded Colt revolver dug up in 1984 from 203 Lednabirichen croft. (2011.041.01) The "Enquiry Form 88" reports: "This is undoubtedly a Colt revolver, possibly of one of the earlier patterns such as the 1851 .36 calibre Colt Navy Revolver. In this state the Dragoon revolver is hard to tell apart from the Navy Revolver of the same date which also has a seven and a half inch barrel, but the Dragoon revolver has a larger (.44) calibre and this one appears much closer to .36. The Navy revolvers were made under licence in London for sale in this country
