
Dornoch additions 1874 -1955
This reproduction map shows how the development of Dornoch 1874 - 1955. The town expanded considerably during this period with the appearance of late Victorian housing south of Sutherland Road in the west, at Cnoc an Lobt, and further west along Evelix Road. Northfield House (subsequently the Burghfield Hotel) and the Royal Golf Hotel (initially a private residence) built in the 1890s and in 1891 the streets were given their present names as shown in this map.
The commencement of Golf on the Links in 1877 required a Club House and led eventually to an expansion of tourism and notably to the coming of the Railway in 1902 with its station and ancillary facilities at the northern end of the town. The Station Hotel (a railway hotel, now the Dornoch Hotel) was built during this period.
In 1913, a new school was built along Evelix Road (the old Dornoch Academy building, now the Primary School) and the old school at School Hill closed (now the Social Club?). Expansion to the northeast of the town took place in 1919 when a Council housing estate was built at Bishopfield, Murray Road and Macdonald Road.
