In the early 1950s there was a two man salmon fishing team netting salmon off the Dornoch beach North of the present bathing beach. When caddying was quiet, several of us Embo boys used to visit these two men at their small living quarters in the wind sheltered sand banks just up from the shore. These living quarters were very basic to say the least. I am sure that these men were not from Dornoch as they were able to teach us Gaelic words that we never heard at home! However, what really did fascinate us was that they had a bolt action .303 Lee-Enfield rifle that they allowed us to hold and even work the bolt with an empty magazine in place. I never actually saw them fire the rifle but they did say that they used it to kill any seals that were attempting to steal trapped salmon from their nets. They obviously set their nets in harmony with the tides, as they did not have a boat to my recollection. However, they did have wooden poles in the sea set at right angles to the shore to which they secured their nets. Comment left on 31 December 2015 at 21:19 by Kenneth Mackay
