This Donald was the son of George John Grant (1782-1857) of Ghriamacary and Helen Fraser (1816-1894 - daughter of Alasdair 'Beag' Fraser and Catherine Sutherland). He was named after George Grant's father Donald, a farmer who had married an Ann Fraser somewhere in Kildonan parish though I don't yet know much about them.

This Donald Grant's brother was Alexander Grant (1850-1922), Evelix, also known as Sandy Grant who married Margaret Taylor and ran the Evelix Farm in Dornoch after leaving Ghriamacary some time between 1881-1883. He was actively involved in the Free Church and is mentioned in the obituaries of the Free Presbyterian Magazine.

My great-grandfather, scratch golfer and 'architect of peace' Donald Grant 1889-1982 also shares this name.

HistoryLinks has copies of George John Grant's Chelsea Pensioner documents from his time in the 93rd Regiment of Foot. He fought in the Battle of New Orleans, which he survived having lost an arm.
