Golf Club prize watch 1901
A large watch in the style of a pocket watch, won at Dornoch Golf Club by J Sutherland in 1901. The watch has a silver case and a plain face with black Roman numerals on a white background. There is a knurled knob at the top for winding and a suspension ring. It appears to be excessively large and heavy for use as a pocket watch but it has been used - the back is scratched and the face cracked. The back cover will not open even though the knob depresses fully. Problems with opening the back in the past are shown by digs and scratches round the thumb tab. The watch is not working. The watch fits into a case which is roughly square in outline. The bottom and side edges are slightly concave and the top slightly convex. The base of the case is covered with red leather. The inside is lined with burgundy velvet and has a shaped depression into which the watch fits. The lid of the case is also covered with red leather. A silver cover is fitted on top of this, covering the front and overlapping a little way down the sides. The watch face is visible through a circular hole in the lid of the case, turning the watch into a clock when it is in the case. A support hinges out from the back of the case to enable it to stand upright. A paper label stuck to the back of the support reads "P-t/- £5-10/-". The lid of the case is lined with red satin and hinged on the right. A small knob on the left is pushed in to release the catch. The silver cover is engraved above the hole for the watch face: "DORNOCH GOLF CLUB WON BY J SUTHERLAND 1901". The silver is hallmarked F & Co, with hallmarks of an anchor, lion, a.
