Monochrome photograph of the ceremony, held in front of the County Buildings practically in sight of the house in which his mother was born, of the Freedom of Dornoch awarded to Viscount Kilmuir of Creich on 1955 April 15th. The pipe band played 'Dornoch's Welcome to Lord Kilmuir' specially composed by Pipe Major Kenny Macrae. Viscount Kilmuir was the second Lord Chancellor to be made a Freeman, the previous one being Viscount Jewitt in 1946. Viscount Kilmuir received the Freedom in recognition of his services to the State, his position as Lord Chancellor, his pre-eminence in the adminstration of the laws of the country, the sympathetic interest shown by him in the great social problems of the day and his family ties with Dornoch and the parish.
The photograph shows left to right ‘Chubby’ Mackenzie; William Grant (Carpenter); Lord Kilmuir, (formerly David Maxwell Fyfe of Birichen); Rev. William MacLeod; William Wright Town Clerk. (In 2009 Norman Wright continues to run the solicitors office in Dornoch founded by his father William).
