Date Added: 16 July 2009 Year: 1910 Institution Name: dnhhl Cat No: | 2003_340 | Picture No: 7750

Monochrome photograph taken at Birichen in about 1910. It shows John O Sutherland's father, David Sutherland (1877-1968), harvesting oats with a binder drawn by two horses, with his mother Bella (nee Oman, 1883-1958) and sister Jeannie (1909-1983) to the left beside the stooks. The binder was an Addriance made in Canada and first bought by Major Sutherland who farmed Proncy and bought by David Sutherland at the roup after Major Sutherland's death. It was one of the few binders in the district and was in use for several years until it broke down and could not be repaired as the makers had gone out of business and spare parts were not available. John O Sutherland remembers it being kept as a historical showpiece. The first binder in the district was a Massey-Harris, bought by John O Sutherland's grandfather, James Oman, meal miller who farmed Milltown of Evelix, in 1899. This binder was in use until at least 1950, when John Oman son of James died.
