Rev G.R. Kennedy

Rev G.R. Kennedy

Date Added: 28 February 2009 Year: 2009 Institution Name: dnhhl Cat No: | 2007_243 | Picture No: 6964

Print of a pencil drawing of the head and shoulders of a man with bushy sideburns, inscribed below "John Kennedy". However, a newspaper cutting at the top, undated but marked 100 years ago, reads "We regret to record the death of the Rev G. R. Kennedy, Emeritus Free Church Minister of Dornoch, at the great age of 87 years". The man looks like a younger version of the Rev George Kennedy in 2002.302.

Underneath "John Kennedy" is the name "Ian McUarie"(?), possibly the engraver, and below this "G. Crow & Son Art Publishers, 65 West Regent St, Glasgow". The drawing itself is signed H Smith at bottom left.

The edges of the paper are torn in several places and there are creases which affect the image area. There are water stains to the left and bottom edges and bottom right corner, and across the centre and top of the portrait itself. The newspaper cutting was stuck to the front top right corner with a large piece of sellotape, now removed. The words "100 years ago" are written below this in pen on the front of the portrait. The edges of the portrait have been trimmed to remove the worst of the damage.

This picture looks like the young Rev. John Kennedy, Dingwall as that is his signature at the bottom of the picture. I have several versions of his signature, and it is identical to that above. He was related to the Kennedys of Dornoch. Ian McUarie is Gaelic for John Kennedy also in his writing, which is quite distinctive.
