I meant to add that if this is a portrait of a John Middleton, it may be that this is the father of the Robert Middleton who died at the hands of Montrose's soldiers. John was know as John of Killhill and he was alive in 1588, when he was the Sheriff of Kincardine. Which makes for a very old portrait.

The dress is late 16th/early 17th century style so not likely to be the Robert Middleton who was killed in 1645 and certainly not his son John.

I would not suggest that I am an expert on clothing but a quick look on the internet revealed many portraits of men in the mid 15th century with the same style of collar as worn in the portrait above. Which may help date the above as being late 15th to early 16th century and if so then as Miss Lyon suggests that the portrait is of a John Middleton, then it could be Robert Middleton's Dad, John, as I suggested before.
