from an album compiled by Lieutenant Robert Cotton Money (see 2008.142), with the inscription ‘Thorpes farm being ‘Black marinated’ in the foreground relics of German equipment' [Capt Rose's diary of 4 Oct refers to "The men call the high explosive shells ‘Coal scuttles’, as they give off a heavy black smoke." Possibly 'Black marinated' is an alternative for the same shells.]
