Grenade fire extinguisher

Blue glass bottle, grenade fire extinguisher from Skibo Castle. The extinguisher held carbon tetrachloride and would have thrown at the seat of a fire. The bottle has the inscription 'Harden Star Hand Grenade' and on the opposite side 'Fire Extinguisher'. It is ribbed with a central raised rim and a circular emblem container a star with the embossed trade name 'STAR'. On the base is a registration number '10490' It has a wire twisted loop around the neck. The seal in the top has been drilled to release the chemical.

I was just given a bottle similar to this. It is green. Has all the same writing on it. Wondering where I can find out how old it is? Still has the plug in it and it is 3/4 full.

Comment left on 13 April 2011 at 18:08 by Kevin Soller Hand grenade fire extinguishers were around from the 1860's but the Harden company started to manufacture them in 1880 and continued to around 1900. There is some uncertainly about what the liquid inside the bottle may be as most appear to be a harmless salt solution but some contained carbon tetrachloride which is very harmful to people (it can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin and can cause damage to the lungs, kidneys and liver) so careful handling of the grenade is probably a good idea just in case Administrator
