There is some background information in Donald Grant's book, "Personal Memories of Royal Dornoch Golf Club":
"A rich London banker, Mr J.J. Barrow, built a mansion on the ridge overlooking the Cathedral ... and called it 'Northfield'. He brought his family, ... brought also fine roadster horses and at least two carriages, had stables built, gardens, shrubbery laid out, and trees planted. That considerable mansion is now the Burghfield Hotel, but while it was still Northfield it was purchased by Lord Rothermere." Comment left on 29 July 2010 at 18:01 by David MacLean

Thanks for sharing this photo. John James Jerome Barrow is my great great great grandfather. I only recently learned of his residence in Dornoch after reading his obituary

Just come on your interesting site. I see Simon Dear's comment and that he is a descendent of JJ Barrow. I am a great grandson of John James and therefore a cousin to Simon Dear. Would he be happy to make contact with me; you could let him have my email address.
Thank you very much

It's nice to make contact with another of the Barrow family via this site. Sadly the first email address I was given 'bounced'. Let's keep trying.
By the way, you can learn more about the Barrow family on the following site:
