Walter Mackay was my ggg grandfather. His son George came to Arkengarthdale, Yorkshire. He was a gamekeeper, watchman at Stang House and also a publican at Little Tontine Inn, Ingleby Arncliffe. I would love to see the whole of this letter. Is that possible? I can only see page 1. Thank you.

Walter MacKay was my ggg grandfather, miller in Dornoch. His daughter Elizabeth, my gg grmother emigrated with her husband Alexander McKay and two of her brothers, Thomas and John to West Zorra Twp., Oxford County, Ontario, Canada in 1830.My Dad used to recount that 3 shiploads of our ancestors came out that year from Dornoch and Rogart, evicted during the highland clearances and settled on 100 acre lots of mature forest in our neighborhood. They arrived in mid August, too late to grow a crop, cut trees and built log cabins before cold weather set in. It was a very large Highland Scottish settlement. We seemed to be related to just about everybody one way or another, it was talked about a lot by the older generations, wish they'd wrote more down. Walter's son Thomas erected a stone in the Old Log Church Cemetery in the twp. which reads: Erected by Thomas McKay in memory of his father Walter McKay B. Sutherlandshire Scotland AD 1778 departed this life Aug 1,1848 Aged 70 yrs: My McKay McKenzie genealogy records show the same dates. The letter from Ian McKay shows Walter's death year as 1837 a difference of 9 yrs(not unheard of).I have 4 MacKay lines, a McKenzie and a Murray from Dornoch,2 MacKays from Rogart, a Matheson from Brora and an Anderson from Morayshire. So far I've run across 7 spelling variations for the surname Mackay. I helped catalogue cemeteries for the Ontario Genealogical Society and found the spelling M'A on a tombstone once. Would love to hear back. Avery MacKay,Nelson, BC, Canada.

In response to Avery Mackay's message of 10/3/2012 I would like to say most interesting and I must look into the new leads. Thank you. George Mackay (whose marriage certificate I have married a Dinah Alderson Scott) named one of his sons James Walter Mackay born in Arkengarthdale, Yorkshire in 1857 Died in 1916 in Middlesbrough,Yorkshire. He named his son James Walter Mackay born in 1892 died in 1928 leaving behind 5 children including my father Albert Mackay. My father was brought up in a Barnardos orphanage. He was just a week shy of being 3 years old. Very sad. We emigrated to Australia in 1968. Would love to hear back from you. Is there any new news re: Walter Mackay. I have his son George Mackay's marriage certificate. He married Dinah Alderson Scott in 1854 in Arkengarthdale , NorthYorkshire.
Was Walter born in 1795 in Tongue? Or was he born earlier than 1795 and had a prior marriage. Also was he a corn miller or a water miller? Or whatever,
. I have been round in circles on this issue so very frustrating and would love to hear any snippets of info. Even if you are not 100 percent certain. Thank you for reading and hope to hear from anyone out there. X

Dear Elaine
Sorry to butt in but very interested to read your family history of George McKay & Dinah Alderson Scott. Sorry can't help on Walter McKay but Dinah Alderson (Scott) McKay is the sister of my g.g. grandfather, John Scott, who emigrated to New Zealand about 1873. Would love to hear from you as we are practically neighbours. Email address: paulinelittle1@ outlook.com
