Mrs Murray Balloan between an enthusiastic looking Sander (King) and his father. Nearest attendent Isobel McLeay and I think that is Mrs GK McKay and Kisha extreme right. Leonard Will Junior above and behind Rev McLeod Comment left on 22 February 2010 at 19:47 by Dan Murray
My spy from that era tells me that the King is Roddy Ross, his father was the Chief Constable. The Queen is Mareen MacKenzie (Cambusmore), male attendant is Charlie Gillanders and the female attendant on the left is Margaret Bain.
The face between the king and queen is Gary Thom and the young lad with the glasses behind Isobel MacLeay is Donald MacKay (Peem)
Boy on the wall on the far left is Peter Doull, Young Leonard is holding his younger brother, Hamish.
Tall boy standing is Harry More, shorter one is Jackie Paterson, between them is Frankie Carmichael.

Still think that the King is Sander maybe you could ask him to confirm or deny the allegation Comment left on 02 February 2011 at 17:33 by Dan Murray
Under intensive cross-examination Sander has strongly and consistently denied that he was ever the Carnival King. Another source from that era is sure that Bill Leslie's spy was correct in identifying the King in this photo as Roderick Ross, but thinks that the Queen's first name was Noreen, not Mareen.

There are two other photos in the archive that appear to be of this carnival: 2006_228 No.2413 and 2006_232 No. 2416. The first misquotes the year as 1945 and (if Bill's and my sources are correct) misidentifies the Queen as Noel Mackenzie rather than her sister Noreen. The other gives the year as 1950 or the 1950s. My source thinks that the year 1954 given in the current entry is about right.

My source agrees with you about the Queen being Noreen MacKenzie, Mr MacLean. I must take issue with you re the date being 1954. Hamish Will and Kisha MacKay (now Black) both look around 3 years old in this image so that would make it 1950 or maybe 1951 Comment left on 06 April 2011 at 11:30 by Bill Leslie

The comments added about the Carnival Queen, on 5 April 2011 (by David MacLean), 6 April 2011 (by Bill Leslie) and 11 October (anonymously), are correct; she is Noreen Mackenzie (now Wookey). Her siblings were, indeed, the late Noel Mackintosh (as stated in the anonymous comment from 11 October 2013), and Donald Mackenzie (of Trevose; I note the article about Donald @ Ref: 2013_105_01 No: 11818). Jean Mackenzie still lives in Trevose, but Noreen Wookey (nee Mackenzie) lives in Sussex. How do I know this? Noreen is my mother, and she has a copy of this picture, along with some others from the same carnival. She has confirmed that the Carnival King is Roddy Ross, the Chief Constable's son.

Regarding the date; my mother left Dornoch and joined the Royal Navy "the WRENS" in December 1954, so the comment added by Bill Leslie on 6 April 2011, suggesting an earlier date than 1954, may be correct, but it's unlikely to be any earlier than 1953. 1954 is probably more likely. I hope this helps!
