Colour postcard from the Furness Collection with four views of Spinningdale, a general view from the south at the top of the card, a central view of the old petrol station, the hotel at bottom left and two little girls standing on the hill above the ruins of the old spinning mill.

Your record for this postcard states that it is from the year 1930. I believe it actually from the 1970s. I remember this postcard being on sale in the Spinningdale shop when I was a child.

My wife, Norah, and I owned Spinningdale Stores and The Fairy Glen Tearoom for five years from 1978. The postcard, along with others of Spinningdale, was specially commissioned for us and photographed and produced by Anne Baxter, Golspie, in 1979. In the top photo you can just see the roof of the shop above the centre picture. The Old Mill Inn (bottom left) is just up the road on what was the A9 trunk road. The "two little girls" looking over to the ruined mill and the Dornoch Firth are actually my SON and daughter! Now in our 70's, we treasure many happy memories of Spinningdale. We were sorry when the shop and tearoom had to close, it's demise brought about by the opening of the Dornoch Bridge and re-routing of the A9, cutting off that beautiful corner of East Sutherland.

Further to the comment from Marion Mackay, the exact date for this postcard is 1979. We owned the shop, PO, petrol station and tearooms (formerly Macraes Stores) from 1978 to 1983. This postcard was specially commissioned for us and was photographed and produced by Anne Baxter of Golspie and Tain. The two children overlooking the old mill are actually my SON and Daughter, Ross and Corran Lyon. The postcard, "Smile Please!", of "Hamish" the Highland cow, was also made for us by Anne Baxter. All the photos were taken at about 6.00am!

What a super wee site you have here! My good lady wife used to have a tune on her accordion way back in "The Stable Bar" at Spinningdale along with local characters such as Jim Calder and others... and Argo Cameron. Sad to see it now...
