The 5th. Bn. Seaforth Highlanders, along with the rest of the 51st. Highland Division, came home from Sicily in November 1943. This is a photo of their Sergeants Mess. My late father in law, who is in the picture, maintained it was taken during the winter of 1943-1944 at Much Hadham in Hertfordshire. I would be interested if anyone could cast further light on the subject.

I recognise the fellow with the bagpipes as Gordon Asher. My father Archie Lockie is probably in the photo. It would be better if it was blown up slightly. I have a number of other photos of 5th Seaforth and also one of a 5th Seaforth dance band called the Wildcats at Much Haddam during WW2.

Think I have spotted my Dad, the fourth from the right second row down, William Sutherland from Bulldo near Thurso, Caithness.

Just learning about some of my family history, and found out my grandads brother was in 5th Seaforth Highlanders, his name was William Brawley sadly he died in August 1944 so no idea if he's in this picture and if he was sadly have no clue to what he looked like (my guess would be very handsome) Ha. But if anyone by chance knows perhaps someone used to talk about him and can maybe recognise him IF he is indeed in this picture.

Derick Lockie - I think my grandfather was in the same band. His nickname was "tooter" as he played the clarinet. if you have any photos of the band that would be amazing.
Linzi Bootman - if you want to find out about the 5th then please read Battalion by Alastair Borthwick which was an account of their war written in 1945. Fascinating account. He was probably killed around the same time my grandfather was wounded near Tilly as they broke out of Normandy towards St. Sylvan. Comment left on 02 August 2021 at 16:16 by Andy Watt

Derick - my grandad was in that band. His nickname was Tooter as he played woodwind. Any photos would be amazing.
Linzi - the book Battalion by Alastair Borthwick will tell you all about the fifth and their war from 1942 - 45. Comment left on 02 August 2021 at 16:19 by Andy Watt
