A hammer head, found in the structure of the south approach to the old railway bridge at the Mound, when the bridge was dismantled c 1961. Thought to be used to wedge the blocks securing the rail to the sleeper. Forged steel, tapered at both ends, with a central hole for the shaft. Rusted and pitted in patches.
More likely to have been used for breaking rocks or similar - head is extremely heavy with narrow profile (PW).
