Monochrome photo of a large gravestone, apparently mounted vertically on a wall. The upper part has arms of two shields with rampant lions, each with three stars above, and the motto ARTE ET MARTE (by skill and war). The inscription reads: WITHIN THIS WALL BEFORE HIS LOFT RESTS THE BONES & DUST OF CAPTAN LAURENCE MIDLETON LATE OF FUTABRUGH(?) BAILIE OF LERWIK OF THE FAMILIE OF CLERKH SPOUS TO GRISEL MOWAT LAWL DAUGHTER TO THOMAS MOWAT OF GAIRTH HE DEPARTED 8 OF AUGST 1709 AND OF HIS AGE 74. There appears to be the remains of an older inscription at the foot. Possible family connection of Miss Lyon. Mounted on a card from Ramsay, The Studio, Lerwick N.B.
